Furniture Donation Declined? Next Steps in Wellesley
Understand why a recipient may decline furniture and choose a practical alternative before booking transport.

Ask which requirement is not met
A decline might reflect condition, dimensions, missing parts, current stock or the program’s focus. Ask whether the decision applies to one piece or the whole list. A recipient’s refusal is not an invitation to drop the goods off anyway.
If the issue is incomplete information
Provide the photographs, dimensions or component list requested. Describe damage accurately and avoid resubmitting the same item with the defect omitted. A more complete description can clarify a decision; it cannot guarantee a different answer.
If the issue is condition
Consider whether a reasonable repair is possible and whether the intended recipient would reconsider after it. Do not pay for repairs on the assumption that acceptance will follow. Unsafe, contaminated or recalled items need an appropriate route rather than another undisclosed handoff.
If the issue is fit or capacity
Another recipient or private reuse route may suit the item, but obtain a fresh item-specific decision. Compare local organizations and donating, selling, repairing and recycling. For mattresses and appliances, use their separate material-specific guides.
Update transport before the work starts
Tell the provider that the destination or list changed. Confirm any alternative handling and revised charges. Collection by a mover does not turn a rejected item into a charitable gift.
- Reason for the decline understood.
- Alternative recipient or route confirmed.
- Transport scope and charges updated.
- Records describe what actually happened.
