Downsizing Donations in Wellesley: A Room-by-Room Plan
Sort a household thoughtfully, keep decisions clear and plan donation routes for the furniture that will not fit the next home.

Plan around the next space
Before choosing donation candidates, measure the rooms and storage in the next home. Identify the furniture that supports everyday life there. A second dresser or oversized dining set may be usable but no longer fit your needs; that does not establish that a particular recipient wants it.
Work one room at a time
Make four groups: keep, ask someone about, donation candidate and alternative route. Leave disputed or sentimental items in the second group until the relevant people have decided. Keep personal papers, photographs, medications and valuables out of collection boxes.
Build a recipient-ready inventory
For each candidate, record the type, quantity, dimensions and condition. Separate a bed frame from a mattress and count dining chairs individually. Photograph useful pieces before rooms become crowded with packed boxes. Compare recipient options based on the actual goods.
Do not let the deadline decide everything
Confirm acceptance and transport early enough to leave a backup route. Keep a written list of what is approved and what is still awaiting an answer. Tell the transporter when your scope changes rather than adding unreviewed pieces on collection day.
- Next-home measurements reviewed.
- Family decisions recorded.
- Each donation candidate photographed and described.
- Recipient and transport confirmed.
- Unplaced items have an alternative plan.
