Establish who can approve the items
When sorting a household after a death or major family change, practical decisions can overlap with ownership and estate matters. Identify the person responsible for authorizing a collection before any item is offered. Resolve legal or ownership uncertainty with the appropriate adviser; a pickup company cannot determine who is entitled to give something away.
Separate review from collection
Make an inventory with a simple photo reference for each large piece. Mark items as approved to donate, retained by family, awaiting a decision or unsuitable for the intended recipient. Keep personal documents and identifying information out of photos shared for furniture review.
Use one coordinator
A single agreed contact can keep the recipient list, access arrangements and transport scope consistent. Share a final item list with the people who need to approve it. Do not rely on a room label such as “everything in the dining room” when some objects are staying.
Agree on the destination and paperwork
Ask the receiving organization what it accepts and who receives any acknowledgment. Keep records and service invoices for the person responsible for the household’s administration. This guide does not determine tax treatment or estate obligations.
